House of the Dead: Overkill - Review

12 Apr 2009, 07:32

Just what do you do when confronted with disgusting monsters and insane scientists? Why, you shoot the mother-loving shit out of them, of course. The House of the Dead: Overkill (the first HotD to be developed exclusively for a home console) brings all the mutant shooting mayhem of the franchise to the Wii in the style of an over-the-top exploitation film, which means a lot of guns, blood, breasts and swearing. Overkill may not be the best example of an on-rails shooter, but there's some decent gunplay while it lasts.

Some strange disappearances prompt AMS Special Agent G to head to Louisiana, where he makes an unlikely partnership with detective Issac Washington. Together they take on Papa Caesar, dangerous crime lord of the Bayou involved in some disturbing human experiments leading to bloodthirsty zombies (or mutants, as Agent G corrects Washington). Along the way they blast apart a few hundred mutants and meet up with Varla Guns, a voluptuous stripper looking for revenge against Papa...

MadWorld - Review

28 Mar 2009, 05:53

There's blood in the streets, and shrieks of pain in the air. That's right sports fans, it's Deathwatch time, where contestants kill and maim each other for cash prizes (and to avoid being maimed themselves). That's the setting of MadWorld, where Varrigan City has plunged into chaos, and any attempt at order has been crushed. Just the way Jack likes it.

The game throws you into the action right from the start, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of story and plot in MadWorld. The entire island of Varrigan City has been overrun by a terrorist group called the Organizers who have, you guessed it, organized the Deathwatch games for the viewing pleasure of anyone lucky enough to avoid being impaled by a caution sign. Enter Jack: an unidentified killing machine who quickly rises in the Deathwatch echelon with his wide variety of murder skills. There's more...

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - Review

22 Mar 2009, 06:02

The original Fire Emblem, released exclusively in Japan on the Famicom, is almost twenty years old. Shadow Dragon brings all the strategy gameplay of the original with new graphics, retouched story and gameplay elements, and online gameplay--a first in the series. Can such an old entry match the quality of last few games in the franchise?

When his father is betrayed and killed on the battlefield, prince Marth (of Super Smash Bros. fame) is forced to flee his own country to train his sword skills in hope of returning one day to bring peace to the war-torn land. Of course, there is also an ancient evil to combat, as the deadly Shadow Dragon Medeus has resurfaced. Long ago he was defeated by Marth's ancestor--wielding the mighty Falchion--but now he has returned to wreck havoc on the continent. Each chapter sees Marth defeat another foe and emancipate the subjugated people, yet Marth and his knights' characters remain fairly static. Unlike other FE games released in America, there is little...

Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars - Review

17 Mar 2009, 09:01

What happens when a mysterious meteor crash lands on Earth, leaving a trail of green mist in its wake? Why, mushrooms become sentient and form their own miniature civilization, of course. Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars for the Wii provides a 3D platforming adventure in the elaborate settings of various mushroom tribes and human dwellings from a 3 inch height perspective. Young Pax, a Bolete mushroom, battles insects, small animals, and evil mushrooms as he uncovers a devious plot surrounding the warring mushroom tribes and glowing meteorite fragments. Amidst some vibrant visuals and shaky camera controls is one distinctly unique adventure.

When Pax, alone and aimless, wanders into a Morel mushroom village and accidentally absorbs the sacred meteorite fragment, the young fungi goes on a quest to find another fragment for the village, as well as learn more about his strange ability. It's not the most elaborate or deep beginning to a story but it puts the main character out into the wild, ready...

Time Hollow - Review

09 Mar 2009, 08:59

Time Hollow joins the point and click adventure lineup on the DS, putting the player in the shoes of Ethan Kairos who wields the power to change the past. Despite some cool ideas and a fairly interesting narrative, this time traveling mystery adventure falls flat.

When Ethan Kairos wakes up on his 17th birthday, he finds that his parents have mysteriously disappeared and he is left living with his uncle Derek. His parents have apparently been missing for 12 years despite Ethan's memories of them. The mystery thickens when Ethan finds a pen that allows him to draw holes in time, reaching into the past to alter the present. As he tries to make sense of his present, Ethan fixes the past to prevent disasters from hurting his friends and family. The game provides a heaping helping of plot, and while it tries to gradually introduce each idea, time travel cannot help but raise a few complications. Not surprisingly, there are a few time parodoxes present and sometimes the game's own time travel...
