I really love Google.
They've just recently announced a new operating system, Chrome OS.
Running on a Linux kernel, this is immeasurably good news for the linux community, which has been kicking ass on it's own recently with great new Fedora and Ubuntu releases.
I expect Google to author huge innovations for linux, and I'm really anticipating their new OS' release.
If Chrome is any indication, Google will probably make a very natural and usable OS indeed, and will definitely bolster Linux support from major software developers.
This probably doesn't mean shit to you guys, but what with me running Ubuntu, I can't help but be excited.
Microsoft should be shitting themselves.

In retrospect, increased competition among operating systems is gonna lead to everybody trying harder to make their product the best, whether its Apple, Microsoft or the Open Source community and that is something great for everybody.

You know that the Google OS is really only intended for Netbooks, right?
The basic idea is this: Google offers all the tools you could need online. So use them there. For offline use, use Google Gears. Then sync and your documents are matched up and correct no matter where you go.
Very much a minimalistic OS and I think that's great. I know when a friend of mine got a netbook, first things that happened, resulted in a broken OS as we tried to strip it down.
Honestly, the shit wouldn't save the wireless password :s Took forever to change that... and then on the new install, forever to find out how we did that, again.

I'm more excited for what Google's gonna do for the UI, not so much for the under the hood features of the OS, and they did say they're starting out on netbooks, but you know Google's gonna be moving it to desktop at some point no matter what.

And not like you couldn't use it on desktops if you wanted. Hopefully this will give the linux OS a much needed push. Fedora is nice, but it's bulky.

Honestly, I think Microsoft is just laughing at some of the claims that it can "challenge" them. I don't even think Apple ever has a chance to get dominance in the OS market. Windows is way to widely used.

I know that, but even pushing linux another one percent would be an incredible achievement.

Yeah to be honest I'm surprised linux is still so small-time on the desktop.
I think it's probably because the average joe looks at linux and dismisses it as this nerdy thing without actually trying it. Not to say this isn't linux's fault -- it is -- but I consider it incorrect either way.
This is why I think ChromeOS is gonna be bad for Microsoft -- It could just possibly open the floodgates. I mean everybody uses Google, right? If the average joe gives linux a try because of Google it could boost adoption of all linux distro's along with it.
Apple probably won't get hit so much, since owning a Mac is almost a fashion statement nowadays, but Windows? I'd be worried about it if I was them.

One of the things I'm really hoping for is the destruction of the statement "Apple makes the ebst GUI"... the only reason people think that is because they are told so.
