Ubuntu: One year later

So Ubuntu is still awesome for me -- only problem I can really remember having with it was internet connection problems after upgrading to a development release of the latest version. My bad, I know. I also had a problem with Compiz disabling itself from being the default Window Manager -- think of Compiz as something that basically makes everything really sexy and smooth -- but I fixed that too.

One thing I noticed with Ubuntu is that it does have occasional problems, but they are often fixed with a quick Google search, in contrast to Windows where these problems are often unfixable.

Another thing I've noticed is that, also unlike Windows, it hasn't slowed down with time -- its actually faster now for some reason than it was when I'd first installed it, and that for every annoyance with it, theres something I couldn't live without.

For example, I pretty much live off the Sticky Notes applet, and I no longer drag and drop windows thanks to Compiz's Put plugin, which lets me click an edge of the screen and have the active window smoothly scroll to that corner.

One problem with Ubuntu however, is the games. Sure, I can run alot of games in WINE with no problems, but alot of games won't run at all, or not well enough for me to even bother. It's that reason I reinstalled Windows 7 -- After my 360 died, my PC was the only place to go for proper HD gaming, and while the capability is definately there, Ubuntu just doesn't do HD gaming well or at all.

Fortunately, everything else is ace -- Never needed to mess with Codecs to get a video to play, Photoshop works perfect in WINE, I love how it handles installation and upgrading of software, and it's font rendering is the best on any system (Yes, that includes Macs).

So overall, I still find myself impressed with Ubuntu, and by the looks of things it's only going to get better.

You could always switch to GIMP you know.

The one thing that really keeps me away from linux is battery management. There is none to speak of. A laptop is no good if it'll only run for an hour.
It's why I tend to run my fedora in virtualisation. I wish I could just run the one installed on my hard drive :(
Instead, I need two separate ones which is the sucks.

Yeah phpBB changed a few hooks in the upgrade which need to be fixed.

But yeah GIMP is good when you're used to it, but I use alot of layer styles, which GIMP doesn't have, so it doesn't usually fit my purposes.
Either way Photoshop still works perfect so chika chika boom all is good.

I don't evne know what you're talking about. I literally only use GIMP because it can do layers.
I only need the basic functionality of mspaint. I'm pro at that.
But doing layers in mspaint is a real pain, multiple jpgs, white backgrounds, then paste it all together, ugh, cannot be arsed.

:O You even attempted to use MS paint to do anything useful? I almost feel like giving you props for even trying xD

I use mspaint for useful things all the time. It's simple and if you know the keyboard shortcuts, it's fast.
Some of the algorithms are vastly outdated, so certain things should be deferred to other apps (resizing and jpg saving for instance)

I've learnt to work around its limitations so well that switching to anything else is cumbersome.

How long exactly did it take for you to use MSPaint effectively? The only thing I ever use it for is quick screenshot saving when on Windows or quick resizing of shit.

I'm not sure. At one point I had to choose between Jasc Paint Shop Pro and mspaint. The former seemed very daunting (and it is horribly designed) - the latter was sooo simple.
This was back when Windows ME was new shit and paint was actually useful. By accident I realised that shift or control (so many years and I still can't remember) allows you to draw perfectly straight lines. I noticed that anything with a white background could be cropped out perfectly if I select the invisible background. I noticed that I could make lines on boxes thicker if I chose line thickness first. I know shortcuts to quickly flipping images upside down or looking at the attributes. Zoom in, apply grid. Cutting and pasting in magical ways. Most of the stuff I do with it is image alteration rather than actual creation. Probably a slow month or so. You could learn it all in a day, become pro in a week (via practise).
I have everything I need to create speech bubbles in mspaint, but without layer management aligning everything is a bit hard, so that's something I use GIMP for.

Man, I never got past the lack of subpixel rendering on the brushes and shit D:
I was pretty much from day 1 going for Photoshop

I'm just old school like that. Ironically, CRTs that require a lot of knowledge to be able to do subpixels properly, tend to have better colours than LSDs.

Most of the time, looking at either, I hardly notice a difference. If anything, I find that the partially coloured "borders" make things look hazy/fuzzy rather than clear.
