Ubuntu: One year later

10 Dec 2009, 21:48

So Ubuntu is still awesome for me -- only problem I can really remember having with it was internet connection problems after upgrading to a development release of the latest version. My bad, I know. I also had a problem with Compiz disabling itself from being the default Window Manager -- think of Compiz as something that basically makes everything really sexy and smooth -- but I fixed that too.

One thing I noticed with Ubuntu is that it does have occasional problems, but they are often fixed with a quick Google search, in contrast to Windows where these problems are often unfixable.

Another thing I've noticed is that, also unlike Windows, it hasn't slowed down with time -- its actually faster now for some reason than it was when I'd first installed it, and that for every annoyance with it, theres something I couldn't live without.

For example, I pretty much live off the Sticky Notes applet, and I no longer drag and drop windows thanks to Compiz's Put plugin, which lets me click an...

Google Chrome OS

09 Jul 2009, 16:33

I really love Google.

They've just recently announced a new operating system, Chrome OS.

Running on a Linux kernel, this is immeasurably good news for the linux community, which has been kicking ass on it's own recently with great new Fedora and Ubuntu releases.

I expect Google to author huge innovations for linux, and I'm really anticipating their new OS' release.
If Chrome is any indication, Google will probably make a very natural and usable OS indeed, and will definitely bolster Linux support from major software developers.

This probably doesn't mean shit to you guys, but what with me running Ubuntu, I can't help but be excited.

Microsoft should be shitting themselves.

I honestly almost thought this site was serious at first, because it makes the same crazy points that some real people actually make.

Thaughts on The Wrestler

16 Feb 2009, 19:16

Truely great storytelling should leave an audience shaken, in awe, of what they've just witnessed.
In the past year, only the Dark Knight has had this affect on me, and I'd had zero expectations of any film to surpass that any time soon.

I was wrong.

Not only is The Wrestler an exciting, emotional rollercoaster of a film, but it managed, somehow, to best the Dark Knight. This is the highest compliment I could give to The Wrestler, and Mickey Rourke diserves every award he gets for his jaw-dropping, tear-jerking performance.

The fact this film was so great to me is an accomplishment in and of itself -- I am a Wrestler, and couldn't help but notice a large volume of differences to how wrestling actually is (though for a movie, it's very accurate) -- so Daren Arnofski diserves huge credit for managing to accomplish everything he did.

If you haven't seen The Wrestler, see it, do anything to see it, you won't regret it.

Ubuntu.

10 Feb 2009, 15:41

For the first two weeks or so of using Ubuntu, I predominantly treated it as a kind of plaything -- a toy -- that I had no real serious intention of using in place of Windows. Oh how things have changed.

At first, I didn't really know what to do with Ubuntu -- typically the first thing I do when I install a new Windows is download Firefox, delete IE's shortcut, and go on a day-long googleathon to find and install all the programs I'm used to using.

Ubuntu was very different, since unlike Windows (or any other OS), it came pre-loaded with literally everything I needed from the get-go.
Firefox, a source code editor, GIMP, Pidgin, a movie player, even a very nice torrent download client. Furthermore, searching for programs didnt even require me to open the browser, since Add/Remove programs not only removed the programs(as in Windows), but also had a massive library of applications that I could simply check, and it would automatically download and install them for me without any extra...
